Educational Program
The Prep – Year 6 Curriculum is based on the Australian Curriculum. See http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/ for more information.
The Australian Curriculum sets out what all young people should be taught and the expected learning outcomes through the achievement standards.
Excursions
All classes have excursions throughout the year as part of the classroom learning program. Parents are asked to sign a form at the start of the year authorising teachers to take children on local excursions. Many excursions require specific authorisation from parents and will be unable to participate if the appropriate forms are not returned to the school.
House Competition
Our school provides a House Competition in athletics, cross country and swimming. Our school houses are Burtonia (red) and Hookey (blue).
Learn to Swim and Water Safety
The Swimming and Water Safety Program is held each year for all Grades 3, 4 and 5 students. Children on Student Assistance do not need to pay for the program. Check the calendar here for dates.
Library
Students are encouraged to use our library and are responsible for caring for books they borrow. Rokeby Primary has a dedicated librarian, Sharon Goldsmith, for two days a week. Book borrowing for parents of Launch into Learning children is encouraged and available on Monday afternoons.
Music
All children, Prep to Grade 6, will have weekly music lessons of 45 minutes duration. Children have the opportunity to join our choir and participate in the school band. All optional activities will be held during class time.
Parent Support
Classroom programs are greatly enhanced when an extra adult is available. Activities such as Arts and Crafts, cooking, motor skills, etc as well as literacy and numeracy activities, are more effective and enjoyable for all. If you would like to provide parent help in your child's class please contact the class teacher. From time to time the school provides training for parents to assist them in supporting children's literacy and numeracy development. All volunteers in the school are required to register for “Registration to Work with Vulnerable People”. If you need help applying, or require the internet facilities, we have staff who are happy to help in the process

Sport
All children in Grades 3 - 6 participate in school swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals. From these events, children are selected to represent the school in interschool and champions' carnivals conducted by the Southern Primary Schools Sport Association. Student Leaders run various casual sporting activities at recess and lunchtimes for all students to enjoy. During the week, students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports tournaments held at lunchtimes. All students from prep - grade 6 are provided with 2 specialist weekly PE lessons and a daily physical activity program.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
All primary classes (Grades 2 - 6) have elected representatives on the student council. The student council provides a forum for the discussion of student matters. The student council meets regularly to discuss and prioritise possible projects.
Student Leadership:
Grade 6 students are provided with a range of shared leadership opportunities during their final year. These include involvement with the Student Council, assemblies, mediators and the daily PE program and lunchtime games.
Support Services:
The school has a part-time School Psychologist, Speech Pathologist, Support Teacher and Social Worker on call.
Our school psychologist can provide a range of psychologically and educationally based services to students, parents and teachers. They can assess children, provide counselling as well as work with teachers in supporting health and life skill programs.
Speech Pathologists diagnose communication problems and provide therapy for children with communication disorders. These problems could include: unintelligible speech; uncoordinated speech production; inappropriate language for age; difficulties with the grammar, meaning and usage of language; inability to understand and follow directions despite normal hearing; difficulties in understanding certain concepts such as those related to space, time or number; stuttering and huskiness.
Social workers can assist families and children who may be experiencing trauma or family issues which impact on a student attendance at school. Our Social Worker is Michelle Ennis.
Support teachers also provide assistance to classroom teachers in a range of areas.
School Bus:
Rokeby Primary boasts its own school bus enabling flexible programs to occur outside of the school on a regular basis.
Uniform:
Rokeby Primary School believes a sense of belonging and equality is encouraged through the wearing of our school uniform. This also provides better levels of safety in and out of the school during off campus activities. The uniform store is open at various times throughout the year. Please contact the office if you require to purchase uniform items. A price list can be found on the “Forms and Documents” page.
Launching into Learning (Rokeby Rockets):

The program known as Launching into Learning (LIL) operates at Rokeby Primary School. The Rokeby Rockets sessions will be open to children from birth to 4 years of age, which will enable siblings to attend. Children must attend with their parent or significant adult.
The program aims:
- to enable young families to connect with the school environment as early as possible, and in a practical way
- to value and build upon the skills and expertise of parents
- to give all children prior to Kindergarten the best possible start to their education
- to serve as a time of enrichment for parents and their children to play and work together, and
- to develop a social network for parents.
In Term 4, there will be an increased focus on preparation and orientation for Kindergarten in the following year. The pre-kinder program has commenced and is available to join.
PROGRAM
The format for the sessions will of course vary but generally there will be a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to choose from and the range of these will vary from week to week. A time is usually set aside for parents to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and for children to have a drink and something to eat. There will also be excursions planned for the group, throughout the year. From time to time the co-ordinator may invite representatives from other community organisations to attend the sessions to meet parents informally and to provide information about services to support families. Suggestions for the program are also welcome.
PARENT ENGAGEMENT:
It is important for parents to be actively involved with their children in the program. Parents are responsible for the children they bring along and need to maintain a close observation and interaction with children in relation to language development, effective use of equipment and materials, general behaviour, toileting, etc. Everyone helps with the workload eg tidying up, packing toys and equipment away, washing cups etc.
Please bring a piece of fruit to be cut up and shared for morning tea. No snack food, lollies, chips etc please.
CO-ORDINATOR
The role of the co-ordinator Elise Hughes is generally one of support both to the parent and to the child. Her main task is to set up the area ready for the commencement of the session, to assist parents and children in the use of the equipment, and to ensure that all the cleaning and packing away is completed at the end of the session.

The Rokeby Rockets program includes:
Play and Learn – Tuesdays - 9:00-11:00am
Pre-Kinder – Wednesdays - 9:00-10:30am
Kinder Gym – Thursdays - 9:00-10:30am
SUNSMART and MOVE WELL EAT WELL:
As we are a Sunsmart group, please bring a hat for outside play.

Enrolment
Enrolling students is an ongoing process through the year. Ages for enrolment are taken from the first of January and the children must be 4 years old for Kindergarten, 5 years old for Prep and 6 years old for Grade 1. Preference is given to enrolment for those students residing within the local school area.

Enrolment Forms
Enrolment forms can be obtained from the school office. Parents wishing to attend Launch into Learning Rokeby Rockets 2019 and who are new to the school, are asked to make an appointment with Elise Hughes, the program coordinator. Those wishing to enrol their child in Kindergarten for 2020 should complete a Kindergarten enrolment form.
Family Contributions (Levies)
Currently, levies are under review.
Families who qualify for the Student Assistance Scheme are not required to pay a levy - Government Policy 2003.
